Annual Eye Exams Recommended for Seniors to Protect Your Peepers

As time passes, the eyes become susceptible to normal aging changes such as cataracts, as well as potentially sight threatening diseases such as macular degeneration and glaucoma. Many eye diseases have no initial symptoms. An annual comprehensive eye exam is the only way detect any potentially sight threatening issues before they become debilitating.

At Macha Eye Care, we recommend that all of our patients, especially seniors, have their eyes examined at least once a year. Your vision is precious. Protect your eyes and keep them healthy with annual exams.

At Macha Eye Care, We focus on Seniors’ Eye Health

We take a complete case history to understand your general and eye health. The eyes and body are connected, so if there are issues with your general health, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, they may affect your eyes and vice versa. Many eye diseases run in families, so knowing about family health issues is also important.

We check your vision and prescription to see if you need a change in glasses to correct for refractive errors including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia (age-related reading problems).

Our commitment to you and your eyes doesn’t end when you leave the optometrist’s exam room. At Macha Eye Care we have a full dispensary with quality frames and lenses. Our dedicated staff will help you select the best eyewear for your visual needs and fashion sense, including bifocals, trifocals, progressives lenses or multiple pairs of single vision glasses. We are committed to you and your vision for life.

Check for Sight-Threatening Eye Diseases

A slit lamp biomicroscope is used to thoroughly examine the front surface of the eye. Our practice uses digital retinal photography, Optomap widefield imaging, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a clear, wide, deep view of the retina at the back of the eye for diagnosis and documentation. We also use tonometry to measure the pressure inside the eye.

The lens inside the eye becomes cloudy with age, particularly if exposed to excessive UV light. This is known as cataracts and will happen to everyone in time. Symptoms of cataracts include blurry vision that often can not be corrected with a change in eye glasses, dimming of colors and glare or halos around lights at night. Once the vision becomes problematic, the treatment for cataracts is surgery to replace the old cloudy lens with a clear synthetic intraocular lens.

Glaucoma is a progressive disease of the optic nerve characterized by high intraocular pressure (IOP) and gradual loss of peripheral vision. At the early stages, there are no obvious symptoms of glaucoma. The only way to detect it is through a comprehensive eye examination. The damage caused by glaucoma cannot be reversed, but if detected early, it can be treated to prevent or delay further vision loss.

The macula is the area of the retina at the back of the eye used for detailed central vision. With age, the macula may become damaged. This is known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD. It may be due to deposits called drusen (dry AMD), or scarring caused by irregular new blood vessel formation (wet AMD). Early AMD does not usually cause any symptoms and can only be detected through a comprehensive eye examination. If found early, vision loss may be prevented or delayed.
