Myopia Control For Children May Lead to Clearer Vision for Life

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or nearsightedness, causes blurred vision when looking at objects in the distance. It occurs when the front surface of the eye is too steep or the eyeball is too long, causing the projected image to fall in front of the retina at the back of the eye.

If there is only a small amount of myopia, near objects will still be in focus and squinting can sometimes help you see in the distance. Larger amounts of myopia lead to blurry distance vision and the need for full time glasses or contact lenses. Myopia is very common condition that usually begins in childhood and unfortunately almost always gets worse with time.

Childhood myopia is becoming more common with very young children showing signs earlier than ever. Research suggests that this trend in childhood myopia relates to increased screen time and less time outside. Regardless of the cause, the increase in childhood myopia highlights the importance of annual eye exams for children.

What is Myopia Control?

Myopia control is a process of gently restructuring the eye to decrease myopia progression in children. Myopia control may not reverse nearsightedness, but it can help slow down the progression of myopia. One theory behind the increasing prevalence of myopia is that too much focusing at near prevents the eyes from being able to relax when looking in the distance. Treatment involves relaxing the focusing muscles of the eyes.

Low-dose atropine eye drops may be administered to children on a daily basis to reduce eye strain and myopia. The drops temporarily halt the eye’s focusing mechanism, relieving fatigue, relaxing the eyes and controlling myopia. Side effects include slightly dilated pupils.

Wearing distance glasses or contact lenses to correct myopia may help a child see the blackboard in school, but it may actually hinder their ability to focus on a book or take notes at near. Multifocal glasses and contact lenses offer excellent distance correction while reducing the prescription at near so that there is less eye strain. Multifocal contact lenses have been shown to reduce the progression of myopia in children and may be a very promising method of myopia control.
