Flashes & Floaters

Understanding Flashes & Floaters

A new, sudden onset of flashes and floaters that persists may be an eye emergency. Contact your optometry office right away for an urgent appointment or go to the emergency room at the nearest hospital.

Schedule an urgent eye examination today if you are experiencing new flashes or floaters.

What are Flashes?

The inside lining of the back of the eye is called the retina. When light stimulates the retina, it sends an impulse through the optic nerve to the brain, where it is translated into an image. If you rub your eyes this also sends a message to the brain in the form of a flicker or sparkle of light.

The vitreous, the gel-like substance inside the eye, is attached to the retina. With age, the vitreous shrinks and becomes more fibrous. This may cause pulling or tugging on the retina which is interpreted by the brain as a flash of light. Flashes may also occur secondary to an eye or head injury, a sudden stop, or a fall.

Sometimes you may see a series of flashes or scintillating lights in conjunction with a migraine headache. Generally these flashes stop within 20 minutes. Flashes may also occur in conjunction with strokes and transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). Seek immediate medical attention if you think you might be having a stroke.

When flashes persist, this may indicate an eye emergency. If you see flashes in conjunction with a shower of floaters or a curtain or veil over your vision, you may be experiencing a retinal tear or detachment. This is a serious eye issue. Call your optometrist right away or go to the nearest hospital emergency department to see an ophthalmologist.

What are Floaters ?

The vitreous is the gel-like substance inside the eye. It contains fibers that you may see floating around in your vision. These fibers are known as floaters. They may look like translucent strings, clumps, or squiggles. They are more prevalent with increasing age, but even young folks can have floaters. Risk factors include high myopia, trauma, injury, and/or past ocular surgery. With increasing age, the vitreous shrinks and becomes even more fibrous. A sudden onset of floaters or a shower of floaters, especially if accompanied by flashing lights, is cause for concern. See your optometrist at Macha Eye Care if you notice any sudden changes in your floaters.
