Digital Eye Strain

Digital Eye Strain and Computer Vision Syndrome – Keeping Your Vision Comfortable

Imagine keeping the muscles in your arm flexed for hours at a time. It would be very difficult and possibly even painful to relax your arm afterwards. Just like the other muscles in your body, the focusing muscles in the eyes benefit from regular movement. Staring at a cell phone, tablet or computer screen for hours on end without changing focus, can make the muscles in the eyes grow very tired and sore. It can even lead to blurry vision. This is known as Digital Eye Strain or Computer Vision Syndrome.

A Few Rules to Follow

Looking at a screen for extended periods of time can be physically and visually exhausting. To combat digital eye strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look away from your computer, focusing on something approximately 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will help to relax the eye muscles, preventing strain and fatigue.

Your regular glasses may not be the best option for computer work. Your computer monitor is typically 20 to 26 inches from your eyes. This is considered an "intermediate" range: closer than the television but farther away than your tablet or cellphone. Specialized lens for computer work will provide you with a larger intermediate area for viewing your computer more comfortably, relieving digital eye strain.

Short wavelength blue light is emitted from digital displays such as cell phones, tablets and computer screens. Blue light tends to scatter more and is harder to focus than longer wavelengths. This leads to visual "noise" and reduced contrast.

Computer glasses with blue light filters block short wavelength light and increase contrast, improving comfort when using digital devices for an extended period of time.

Talk to your optometrist about computer glasses with blue light filters.
