Diabetic Eye Exam

Regular Eye Care is Essential for People with Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes

Diabetes is a very serious chronic disease resulting from the body’s inability to produce enough insulin or an inability to effectively use the insulin that it does produce. This results in high blood sugar which can damage organs, blood vessels and nerves. Diabetes affects the whole body but particularly the small blood vessels in the feet, hands and eyes.

Diabetic Eye Disease

If blood sugar and insulin levels are not properly managed, there can be damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. This is known as diabetic retinopathy. The blood vessels may become weak resulting in retinal hemorrhages and fluid accumulation. In advanced diabetic retinopathy, the retina tries to form new blood vessels which are leaky and have a tendency to bleed. The result is scarring which may lead to vision loss centrally and peripherally.

Diabetic macular edema (DME) is swelling and fluid accumulation in the macula, the area of the eye used for central, detailed vision. It results from poorly controlled blood sugar and insulin levels. This may lead to central vision loss or even blindness, if left untreated.

If you develop diabetic eye disease requiring treatment, your optometrist will refer you to an ophthalmologist who specializes in diseases of the retina.

For diabetic retinopathy, laser photocoagulation may be used to target weak blood vessels to seal them. The goal is to stop blood and fluid from leaking into the eye, preventing significant vision loss. Dr Macha and his associates may refer you to a retinal specialist for treatment of DME which may include intraocular injections, called anti-VEGF therapy.

The best treatment for diabetic retinopathy is prevention. Annual eye exams with your optometrist and stabilization of blood sugar and insulin levels in conjunction with your physician are the key to good eye health.

A Thorough Exam that uses Specialized Technology

Type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as pre-diabetes put people at risk for a variety of eye problems, often without any symptoms, until irreversible damage has been done. The best way to catch and treat diabetes-associated eye diseases, known as diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema, is through annual or more frequent eye exams with an optometrist.

People with diabetes and pre-diabetes should have a dilated eye exam at least once a year that includes digital retinal photography, Optomap widefield imaging, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to get a clear, wide, deep view of the retina at the back of the eye.
