Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Think You or Your Child Might Have Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)? See Us First

There are lots of causes of red eyes, including fatigue, contact lens overwear and environmental dryness. Conjunctivitis or pink eye, as it is more commonly known, is an irritation and inflammation of the clear membrane overlying the eyeball and inner eyelid. It may be infectious, due to a bacteria or virus, or it may be allergic. Many of the symptoms and signs overlap, so it is important to know the cause before starting treatment. An optometrist at Macha Eye Care will determine the underlying reason for your conjunctivitis and provide you with the appropriate treatment.

Call our office to schedule an urgent appointment for the diagnosis of conjunctivitis.

Types of Conjunctivitis

Bacterial conjunctivitis is identified by thick, sticky yellowish-green discharge, redness and swelling. It can actually cause the eyelids to be stuck shut when you wake up in the morning. The discharge can often be cleared with warm water and a clean face cloth. Bacterial conjunctivitis is very contagious and is usually acquired by touching someone or something that is infected and then touching your eyes. If you have bacterial conjunctivitis, it is important not to spread the disease. Wash your hands, pillowcases and towels frequently and avoid sharing towels, clothing or utensils. Also refrain from going to school or work until the condition has resolved.

Treatment

Broad spectrum antibiotics may be used as first line treatment to decrease the duration and limit the spread of infection of bacterial conjunctivitis, but may not be necessary in uncomplicated cases. Decreased use of antibiotics will help to reduce antibiotic resistance. Your optometrist will suggest or prescribe the necessary medication.

Viruses are responsible for the common cold and flu, but can also cause conjunctivitis. Symptoms include red, itchy, swollen eyes with tearing or a yellowish discharge. Viral conjunctivitis is contagious so wash your hands, pillowcases and towels frequently and avoid sharing towels, clothing or utensils. Also refrain from going to school or work until the condition has resolved.

Treatment

Unfortunately, just like colds and flus, antibiotics don’t treat viral conjunctivitis. This type of conjunctivitis simply has to run its course. It is very important to see your optometrist to differentiate viral conjunctivitis from bacterial conjunctivitis to know whether treatment is indicated.

Allergic conjunctivitis is a specific type of allergic reaction affecting the eyes. It may be caused by pet dander, specific foods, pollen or seasonal changes. Symptoms include red, itchy, watery, eyes and puffy eyelids. Fortunately, allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious so usually there is no need to miss work or school. It is important to refrain from rubbing your eyes. Rubbing often makes the itching and inflammation worse, and touching your eyes with dirty hands can lead to bacterial or viral conjunctivitis.

Treatment

To avoid allergic conjunctivitis, stay away from allergy triggers when possible. There are many oral and topical antihistamine and anti-inflammatory treatment options that may help alleviate and manage your symptoms. Please see one of our optometrist at Macha Eye Care to examine your eyes thoroughly and help make the best recommendation for you.
