Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration with an Eye Exam and Good Nutrition

The macula is the area of the retina at the back of the eye used for detailed tasks such as reading, watching television or looking at faces. With age, some people may develop a chronic, progressive disease of the macula known as age-related macular degeneration or AMD. A person with early AMD may not experience any symptoms, so annual eye examinations are essential to detect the disease. By the time someone does notice a problem with their central vision, the damage may be irreversible. Symptoms include partial or complete blind spots in the central vision, while straight lines may become wavy or distorted.

Prevention

Dry or atrophic AMD is common and generally causes very gradual vision loss. Deposits called drusen develop in the retina at the back of the eye. There is no treatment to reverse dry AMD but the right nutrition along with UV protection can slow the disease.

Wet or exudative AMD causes devastating, often rapid and sometimes severe vision loss. Blood vessels in the retina at the back of the eye become damaged with age. The body tries to replace the damaged blood vessels with new ones that tend to be weak and leaky. This can lead to significant scarring of the macular tissue. Dry AMD may convert into wet AMD or wet AMD may happen on its own.

Monitoring your vision to to avoid vision loss is crucial. Your optometrist may ask you to use an Amsler grid to test each eye and watch for changes in your vision. If caught early, there are some treatment options available to halt wet AMD and reverse some of the damage. Dr Macha and his associates may refer you to a retinal specialist for treatment of wet AMD which may include intraocular injections, called anti-VEGF therapy.

Proper nutrition plays a key role in eye health as well as preventing or slowing AMD. We require vitamin A, C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, lutein and zeaxanthin for optimal eye function. This is best achieved through dietary sources, as well as supplementation. A healthy diet, high in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, including green leafy vegetables, as well as fruits and vegetables of different pigments helps to slow ocular aging. Ask your optometrist which eye vitamins are right for you.
